Horticulturist & Maintenance Manager
David’s love for gardening started when he was a youth in his home town of London, Ontario working after school, on weekends and throughout many summers at a large estate home. His career took a professional turn when he was hired as a private gardener at one of Canada’s finest estate gardens. He apprenticed under European gardeners receiving accreditation through the Ontario Ministry of Skills and Development as both a Horticulturist and Greenhouse/Glasshouse Worker. David went on to become the head gardener at the estate.
Throughout David’s career he has been able to share his love and passion by teaching gardening fundamentals and introductory landscape design at the community college level and also heading Communities in Bloom projects. David has also served in the public realm as a Municipal Parks Superintendent and lead a team at a large garden centre with production nursery serving retail and wholesale customers.
During the start of the last decade, David moved to BC’s lower mainland where he developed social enterprises focused on employing individuals with barriers to traditional employment, offering them training opportunities in landscape maintenance. David joined Craine Projects as the Landscape Maintenance Manager and now oversees all horticultural projects from installation to ongoing maintenance.
He resides on Bowen Island with his partner, enjoys cooking and exploring the west coast and all its natural beauty.

Horticulture & Maintenance Lead
Design, Build & Horticulture Project Coordinator
Shirlei is passionate about plants and gardens. Through her Bachelor’s degree in Urban Forestry, she discovered that most greenspaces are located on residential properties. After graduating, she wanted to have a more significant impact on the urban environment by working in landscape maintenance. As a landscape supervisor, she learned planting and pruning techniques to ensure that plants thrive in urban settings. Throughout her journey, she discovered that many garden designs are not sensible and are very high-maintenance. This sparked a wish to create her own sound and low-maintenance gardens. Her goal is not only to design landscapes that are beautiful, but are also ecologically functional; that support the declining songbird population, native pollinators, all the way to soil microbes. She has found a place to fulfill that goal at Craine Projects, where she carefully selects plants for their beauty, needs, and role in a garden bed. In her free time, Shirlei enjoys hiking, painting, and discovering new plant combinations.
